I'm sure you are aware that this is a competition for Edinburgh Festivals, which includes eleven other festivals; Edinburgh International Film Festival, Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh Mela Festival, International Story Telling Festival, Edinburgh's Hogmanay, Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival and Edinburgh International Science Festival.
The mobile phone application you have mentioned is solely for Edinburgh Festival Fringe and you can't book tickets on it. Instead, it directs you to a telephone number for the Fringe Box Office.
My idea encompasses all of Edinburgh's Festivals, as per the brief. Instead of using multiple applications for each festival, I am proposing one application that provides festival goers with the ability view and book upcoming events based on your GPS location and taste, for all of Edinburgh's Festivals. As far as I am aware, there is no such application.
By booking tickets via the app, not only would it cut staffing costs and it be an environmentally friendly solution, it would make it easier for festival goers to purchase tickets without having to search for the nearest ticket office.
There are many complexities involved with bringing together well established festivals, each with its own way of doing things, as one can well imagine. That said Festivals Edinburgh are able to provide joint listings that also involves some ticket buying options:

I haven't used it properly and it seems to direct the user towards the individual festival box offices, but don't hold me to that.

Fringe already has an app which can do most of this for iPhone and android
Duncan, thanks for your comment.

Many years have passed since the festivals started working on a shared ticketing portal...
